I'm guilty of it too... I've totally caught myself in a fantasy about how great it would be to sign with an indie label. In that fantasy, you're cared for, held in highest regard, and everyone at the label believes in your vision and knows how to execute it at a scale larger than you're currently capable of.
But things don't always turn out that way, which is what Kelsey Warren of Blak Emoji came on to discuss. In this episode, we're joined by not just Kelsey, but his bandmate Whitney Tai to talk about some ways you can potentially dodge a bad situation. Spoiler alert? Have your contracts reviewed!

Blak Emoji’s new single “Mainstay” is out now on ECR Music Group. “Mainstay” is the lead single from the forthcoming Deluxe-Edition version of his new, remastered album Eclectro, out in early 2023. The celebrated album has been re-sequenced and remastered by indie-music luminary and ECR founder Blake Morgan, as part of a four-part full catalog reissue from the label.
“I’ve loved and respected Blak Emoji’s work for years,” says Morgan. “I’m thrilled to have him join our roster, and honored to have had the opportunity to remaster his catalog for these stunning ECR reissues.”
Blak Emoji is the nom de plume of acclaimed New York City producer, recording artist, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Kelsey Warren.
About the new track, Warren says, “‘Mainstay’ is simply about being a friend for someone in the end; expressing that you’re “on-call” for a person if they’re down or in a situation. This also relates to how you feel about yourself. Do you need or want to lift yourself up; do you have the tools? Will you be there for yourself like you are for others?” Sonically, he describes the track as, “Electrofunk hot sauce with pop sprinkles. There’s definitely some warped, cool Eno-like sounds swirling around as well. Trippy head bobbing track.”
Following a series of critically and commercially successful releases, multiple TV and film placements, U.S. and European tours, and a host of accolades from front-line publications like Rolling Stone and Tape Op, Blak Emoji has joined the celebrated roster at ECR Music Group.

The New York City born duo, BLAKTAI, made up of Blak Emoji & Whitney Tai met in the spring of 2017, realizing the potential of their musical collaborations. Their plan was to see how much music they could compose and record within the span of a month. Through this experiment, their hypnotic, downtempo sound was born. Impose Magazine calls their 2018 debut single 'Skin' "enveloping", "enticing"; that the duo's "dynamic creates harmony- both musical and human." After years of contributing to each other's solo projects, Tai and Emoji reunited in 2023 via live shows at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC and sold out shows at LA's Hotel Cafe. Alan Sparhawk of Low writes that BLAKTAI’s version of his song “All Night“ soars to new heights and horizons.” Their first 2024 release Behind The Wheel, a Depeche Mode classic, has already been receiving high praise among industry insiders and fans alike.
